Shoving and shuffling to fall into a crooked line
Naughty little heads with eyes that shine
A tickle here the boy in front ,
A stamp there the girl behind
All in the name of morning prayers...
The stomping of shoes all the way up the stairs
The scraping of benches to rush into their chairs
The classroom vibrating with energy and laughter
All dimming to a reluctant murmur when expecting a teacher
The nod of a sleepy head , the chatter of a chirpy head
The questions of a curious head , the vague stare of a dreamy head
The disruptions of a naughty head , the confusions of a muddled head
The complaints of a provoked head , the giggles of a distracted head
The shrill call of the bell brings the lunch hour roar
The sudden rush of little bodies through the narrow doors
Rushing headlong through stairways and corridors
With the clang of lunchboxes , and spoons that clatter
The chomp of hungry mouths , amidst loud chatter
And a dozen sweaty heads and grimy hands from a lunch hour tussle
Rush back into the confines of the class in a hustle
To settle into a dull stupor through rest of the hours
Only to awaken with renewed energy after the afternoon wears
Clumsily stuffing baskets with half open lunch boxes and water bottle caps
Hurriedly dumping dog eared notebooks and tattered text books into bulging bags
Snapping shut pencil cases with broken pencils ,shavings and all,
Making a dash to the gates as freedom calls
As they pile away in buses and vans
Screaming and shouting goodbyes and greetings
To dear little friends separated till next morning
Exchanging waves with promises of meeting ..
Throats that are sore and worn from activities galore
With all that madness and so much more ..
A tired smile comes to the fore..
For this is the joy a teacher enjoys!
